On September 14th, at precisely 5:00 PM, 2009, the Kendal Hoot ‘n’ Holler Garden Railroad was officially opened by the builder,.......
Don Parker, when he drove the Golden Spike.
Don Parker has been involved in designing and building Garden Railroads since 1995 and still writes a regular column for the Garden Railways magazine where Hoot ‘n’ Holler will be featured in the April, 2010 issue.
When Don and his wife, Joyce, moved to Kendal a year ago from Cinnamon Lake, Ohio, he brought with him all the scale model trains, miniature buildings and tiny shrubs he had so zealously collected, constructed and cultivated over the past 14 years.
All the residents at Kendal were invited to participate in this historic, opening ceremony..........
including the Kendal day-care children who thought the whole exercise was a real hoot.
This installation at Kendal is approximately 40 feet long by 20 feet deep and includes more than 300 feet of G gauge track, 13 switches, 7 bridges, 3 trestles and a tunnel.
The two locomotives used are appropriately fitted with scale model cars; one as a passenger train, the other as a freight train.
The freight train locomotive is an exact replica of the narrow gauge, 2-8-0, Consolidation made by Baldwin in the early 1900s, and......
The passenger train locomotive is a generic replica of an 1870, narrow gauge, 2-6-0, Mogul.
There are more then 25 “occupied” structures in the overall layout, including....................
A grist mill with a working, overshot water wheel.......
A replica of an 1898 railroad station in the town where Joyce grew up..................
A partially, burned-out hotel with an attached general store............
And, an old fashion outhouse....in use, of course!
