SHEILA ECKSTEIN: WATERCOLORS

This exhibit is a retrospective representing work done by Sheila Eckstein over a period of thirty-five years. It consists of paintings in her personal collection and some lent by private collectors.
In her preferred medium of transparent watercolor, with its possibilities of translucency and freshness, she explores the wonders of nature. “ I respond deeply to the sensations produced by the natural world around me. My feelings are greatly affected by what I see when I look out of the window or walk in the woods or sit and paint in a garden. I want to capture on paper the mood of the subject or the essence of a moment. These are private paintings of my environment.”
“Another source of inspiration has been the landscape of the southwest: one of sweeping skies, canyons and desert with their subtle forms, changing light and vast spaces. It is a landscape interpreted not in the literal sense but simplified into abstracted forms, expressing its quiet, timeless and poetic aspects.”
Sheila Eckstein was born in Massachusetts and holds an A.B. from Wellesley College in History of Art and an M.A. from Harvard in Fine Arts. After moving to Ohio in 1958 painting became her principal activity, and she exhibited extensively in invitational, juried and one-man shows.
