Connie Flanigan Boase
Connie grew up in the Cleveland and Shaker Heights area but went to college in Oberlin, graduating in 1946. She then returned to Oberlin in 1958 to raise her children. Connie taught in the elementary school and worked in the family’s manufacturing business until she was widowed in 1979. She has had a lifelong commitment to volunteering, and was very active in the Girl Scouts and was on the boards of the Lorain County Mental Health Association and the Allen Memorial Hospital Foundation.
Even before moving to Kendal at Oberlin on October 5, 1993, Connie was engaged in the planning and development of the new community. There were many meetings as plans and issues developed. She also got immediately engaged in the bridge group, reading and music. Connie was the first KORA secretary and chaired the pet committee. Speaking of being engaged... she and Paul Boase, a fellow Kendal resident who was a widower, met here, courted, and were married on July 28, 1996.
Connie's family and grandchildren mean the world to her. She loves to share their pictures and successes. It means a lot to her. She said that no matter how old our children are, they are still our babies.
Connie has continued to stay active in many areas over the years. She played a critical role in the building of our great pool and spoke at the groundbreaking for the new Whittier assisted living wing, which just opened this last year. Kim Preston says that she really admires how, despite her lung problems, Connie really worked to make it possible for folks on oxygen to be able to swim in the pool – that made a bid difference not only for her but for other residents like Eva Greenberg. Connie also spearheaded Kendal having a team in the Oberlin Lung Walk, for which we received a beautiful crystal award in 2010. Dottie Holzhauer said that Connie's heroic efforts succeeded in raising a lot of money. She even went up in a hot air balloon to experience the thrill of floating like a bird. Connie truly soars!
